I Miss My Classic Pitchers – Andy and Mo
Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera

These two cuties have known each other since 1995. Aside from Andy’s short stint in Houston, they have been together as Yankees forever. Together, they have a combined 10 World Series rings. Where would the Yankees be with out them? Andy and Mo are classics, and I miss them.

Last year at this time, Yankee fans were unsure if Andy would return. Thank God he did. Andy was a valuable force in the rotation. Whenever the Yankees really needed to win a game, it was Andy who won it for them. His 2009 numbers were great. Andy was 14-8 with a 4.16 ERA. He was a clutch pitcher this year. I am glad to know that he will be back for 2010.
Mariano Rivera hasn’t planned on leaving the Yankees yet. I hope he stays forever. I can’t imagine the Yankees without Mo! His stats were as good as ever. Mo had a miniscule ERA of 1.76, and he nailed down 44 saves. Mariano says he would love keep on pitching and that he feels great. That’s comforting news for Yankee fans!

Andy has been special for the Yankees all year, but especially in the postseason. He was 4-0 in this postseason, and won the clinching game in all three series. Thanks to his success in the ’09 playoffs this year, Andy now has the most postseason wins of all time, passing John Smoltz.

The greatest Mariano moment of this year was obviously his 500th save. On June 28 against the Mets, Mariano made history. Alex Cora dribbled a weak grounder to Cano, who flipped to Tex, which led to the Yankees congradulating Mo by first base. Earlier in that same game, Mariano recorded his first ever RBI. That was pretty funny.

I love these two so much. Andy and Mo are both a thrill to watch, and to listen to. Andy had that cute Southern drawl, much like Huckleberry Hound, and Mo has an endearing Hispanic accent. Both are extremely intimidating. Andy does that stare,

and when you hear ”Enter Sandman” and see this,

it’s pretty scary.
I miss the Andy and Mo - the pitching half of the Core 4. Guys, I hope you had a lovely Christmas, and enjoy the offseason! I can’t wait to see you!

Good luck on keeping these guys, they have done wonders for the Yanks and they’re pretty cool guys (as far as I can see). And I agree, when Mo walks in to “Enter Sandman,” it is really scary, especially for a Sox fan like me

Mo has been there for years and years, and I can’t imagine what it would be like when he is gone.
