Yanks Beat Jays, Have Momentum On Their Side For Sox

Yanks Take 2 From Jays, While Red Sox Lose 2 to Rays!

Looking back, I’m kind of glad the Yankees lost 3 to the White Sox. I know it sounds crazy, but if they won those games against the White Sox, then realistically they would’ve had to lose versus the Jays, and then would be facing the Sox after losing. Now, they had a short bad stretch, and are hot as they get ready to tackle Boston. The Red Sox just lost 2 to the Rays, and are going into the Bronx with those loses in their heads. I like the way this is going right now. The Yankees won last night by the score of 8-4.

Pitching Analysis: I thought the key for Mitre’s success last night would be to get out of the 1st inning with a goose egg on the board. He got 2 quick outs, and from the dinner table I was shouting, “Come on, Serg! 1 more!” Well, after the 2 outs, Mitre surrendered 4 straight singles for 2 runs. Shucks. But after that, Mitre didn’t give up another run intil the 5th, where Adam Lind hit a leadoff homer. That was all for Mitre. Even though he only gave up 3 runs, I don’t think it was a great start by Mitre. He went to 3 balls on almost every hitter, and because of that, he failed to go deep in the game. But he did keep the Yankees in the game, which is really all we could ask from a 5th starter.

Poor guy.

Mitre was relieved by Aceves, who got the win. Then it was Coke, Hughes, and Robertson. The bullpen did a nice job last night. There were a lot of innings to eat, and I thought Girardi did a nice job managing the pen. Overall, pitching was a plus, but I’m still waiting for Mitre to be able to go deeper into the game.

Defensive Analysis: When you have a pitcher that you know is going to struggle, defense becomes even more important. Defense was a plus last night. In the 3rd, Vernon Wells was on first with 2 outs after forcing a runner. The Yankee-killer Alex Rios was at the plate. But thanks to Jose Molina, Mitre wouldn’t have to face him for long. Molina did a snap throw to first, which nailed Wells for the final out. Nice.

In the 8th when Hughes was pitching, my man Melky made a nice play. Rios hit a ball to deep center which chased Melky back. Leche made a lovely running backhand catch, and he couldn’t stop running, so he sort of crashed into the wall. He didn’t have to do that to make the play. I love Melky. He always finds a way to make me laugh.

Cano and the Bombers hope to turn their fortunes around Thursday night against the Red Sox.

Cano is so smooth at second.

Offensive Analysis: The offense was great last night. The Yanks scored 2 in the 3rd. Hairston led off with a walk, Jeter singled, and Johnny singled, scoring Hairston. Tex had an RBI ground out, which tied the game at 2. The 7th was the big inning for the Yanks. Nick Swisher led off with a homer, then Cano doubled. Matsui got a pinch hit single to drive home Cano. Molina walked, and Damon singled to score Matsui. Then Tex singled to score Molina. By the end of the inning, the Yanks had a 6-3 lead.

In the 8th, the Yankees scored another run thanks to a leadoff double by Cano, who scored on a sac fly by Hinske. The Yanks tacked on another one in the 9th, courtesy of Damon’s big fly. It was a great game all around for the Yankees.

I hope we see this tonight!

When you beat Halladay for the first game, that feels pretty good. But when you win the next game and you knew your starter would struggle, that must feel just as good. The heroes for last night are the Yankee bullpen for getting us to the end of the game nicely, and one of the most underrated Yankees, Johnny Damon. He went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI. He’s really good. I always say it, and I ‘ll say it again: the Yankees have to be stupid to not sign Damon. With the Red Sox loss, the Yanks have a 2.5 game lead. Tonight they tackle Boston. I think they are ready, and I am ready too. YA HEAR THAT, BOSTON? WE ARE READY! BRING IT ON!
